Trojans offense explodes in DH sweeps of South Suburban and DuPage

Since returning home from their Florida trip, the spring weather has played havoc with the Triton College softball team. The Trojans played only 4 games during a three- week span (March 16-April 6) due to a number of postponements.

So, getting back in rhythm was a challenge for Triton after a pair of losses on the road against Danville Area Community College leading into home twin-bills with South Suburban College on April 8 and College of DuPage on April 9.

However, the Trojans offense erupted for 44 runs en route to sweeping all four games, 10-1 and 15-7 against South Suburban. Then 6-4 and 13-7 finals over DuPage.

Jocelyn Gonzalez sparked Triton (13-12) in the first game vs. South Suburban with five RBI's. She hit a two-run homer in the first and then followed with a bases loaded clearing double in the second.

Genciana Ortiz was 2-for-2 with a triple and a double to drive in four runs.

In game two with the Bulldogs, the Trojans pounded out 14 hits, including home runs by Gonzalez, Alexa Norgard and Anjelina Dwyer.

The next day against College of DuPage, Triton rallied from 4-1 down to tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and then took the lead in the sixth. Anaiyah Costoso broke a 4-4 deadlock with a solo blast to right field. Gonzalez would later add an RBI single to give the Trojans some insurance.

Emily Cruz pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit to earn her first win of the season.

In the nightcap against the Chaparrals, Triton was trailing 7-1 after an inning and a half. Then the Trojans bats woke up with 12 unanswered runs including a big seven-run third inning. Liliana Mar paced the attack with four hits and Leah Lowery had three hits.

Lowery also contributed in the circle in relief to toss the final four innings to pick up her sixth victory of the year.

Triton hits the road for doubleheaders at Madison College (April 14) and Morton College (April 15). The Trojans will be back at home on Friday, April 17 to host Bryant & Stratton in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
