The Triton College volleyball team improved to a 4-2 to start the season after winning in three straight sets (25-15, 25-23, 25-19) Sept. 5 at Malcolm X College in Chicago.
The Trojans dominated the first set by finishing on a 15-8 run to establish the tone for the evening.
In set two, Triton head coach
Guy Lum started out with a different lineup and the Hawks took advantage building a six-point lead on three separate occasions, including as late as 16-10. However, the Trojans rallied once the regular lineup was back in place, highlighted by a couple key service aces by
Holly Trotter that completed the comeback.
Set three was close early before the Trojans pulled away to close out the match.
The Trojans offense was once again anchored by setter
Thea Tamondong with 30 assists.
Sophomore
Brianna Hernandez had a team-high 14 kills along with four service aces and seven digs.
April Salgado led Triton with 13 digs. Sophomore
Paige Walker had nine digs and seven kills. Â
Carole Akers finished eight digs and six kills in the winning effort for the Trojans.
"The plan was to play the starters the first set and get a gauge of where Malcolm X was at since there was very little information available on them and they improved a lot since last year," Lum said. "
Holly Trotter came out serving bullets to help us pull out the second set. It's another Region 4 win, which puts us in good position looking at some of the games we have the next couple of weeks."
Triton will be tested this week with a pair of road games. The Trojans will travel to No. 23 NJCAA ranked Milwaukee Area Technical College on Wednesday (Sept. 10) before making the short trip to Narragansett and Montrose Friday (Sept. 12) to play for the first-time ever in volleyball Wright College. Both games are 6:00 p.m. starts.
