In their final tune-up before the Great Lakes District Tournament, the Triton College wrestling team had eight place winners, including three champions at the Whizzer Open hosted by Henry Ford Community College Feb. 4 in Dearborn, MI.
The Trojans were led by sophomore
Elon Rodriguez who took home his fourth individual crown of the year at 133. Rodriguez ranked fourth in the nation at his weight class defeated Tuvsin Zunnbayan of Harper College by a 2-1 decision in the finals.
Both
Connor Svantner (157) and
Alonzo Smiley (165) won their first individual titles of the season. Svantner, ranked fifth nationally was victorious by an 11-8 decision over Ethan Ferro of Niagara Community College. Smiley got by Triton teammate
Luke Barron in a close 4-2 decision in the championship match at 165.
In addition to Barron finishing second,
Cameron White was third at 157,
Ronald Krewer placed fourth at HWT,
David Capron placed fifth at 149 and
Anthony Bitner was sixth at 149 for the Trojans.
Triton now shifts their attention to the Great Lakes District Tournament Feb. 18 at Harper College. The tournament will determine who will qualify for the NJCAA Wrestling Championships March 3 and 4 in Council Bluffs, IA. The
No. 6 NJCAA ranked Trojans will be looking to win their first district team championship since 1998 when Triton competed under the Midwest District.
