The steady approach all season for the Triton College wrestling team paid off in a huge way at the Great Lakes District Tournament Feb. 22 at Muskegon Community College in Michigan. The Trojans took home a third-place team finish and qualified seven wrestlers for the NJCAA Championships taking place March 6 & 7 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
"We battled and competed well in the tough matches and won the ones we needed to and secured enough bonus points which helped the team finish third," said head coach
Chris Butz.
Damari Reed highlighted the Triton qualifiers by winning the individual district crown in the 157lbs weight class. The sophomore defeated Maguire Hoeksema of Harper College by a 14-3 major decision in the championship bout.
Everett McClelland was runner-up at 197.Â
Jase Salin finished third at 165.
Dylan Eimer (125lbs) and
Fabian Salazar (149lbs) each placed fourth to punch their automatic tickets to nationals.
Keygan Jennings (133lbs) and
Bennett Eichert (174lbs) both placed fifth and were selected to qualify to nationals as 'Wild Card' entries based on the body of their work throughout the season.
"We're peaking at the right time and have better than a week and a half to get back in the lab and clean things to get ready for the national tournament," Butz added. "The guys are seeing the culmination of their work this season and look forward to them showing that at nationals"
