The Triton College wrestling team continues to make positive strides as they prepare for the last set of events leading up to the Great Lakes District Tournament on Feb. 27. The Trojans placed five wrestlers including earning a champion at the Stromin' Norman Open held Jan. 24 at Harper College in Palatine.
Triton made the most of the event as some of the teams could not make it due to the below zero weather that has impacted the Midwest.
Everett McClelland took home the title at 197 defeating Michael Maverick of Harper by pin at 3:59. The win was important for McClelland as the bout could be the first of three potential meetings with Maverick in a month's span. The two will likely clash once again at the Region 4 Duals Feb. 7 and at the district tournament.
The Trojans had a pair of second place finishers with
Keygan Jennings at 133 and
Bennett Eichert (184).
Fabian Salazar (149) and
Terrence Garner (285) both placed fourth at their respective weights. Â Â
"It was good to see us as team make the incremental changes and incremental progress' said Triton head coach Cris Butz. "We're are not where we need to be, but we are trending in the right direction."
The Trojans will participate in their final open of the season before the district tournament this Saturday (Jan. 31) at Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn. Mich.
