Valentine's Day ended up turning into a "Sweet 16" for the Triton College women's basketball team when they made the trip 90 miles north to face Bryant & Stratton College in Milwaukee. The Trojans controlled the contest to pick up a Triton school record-breaking 16
th consecutive win in a 64-46 victory over the Bobcats.
Triton broke the previous mark of 15 straight wins set by the 1982-83 squad.
"It's a great accomplishment for us to break the school record," said head coach
Drew Winston. "But what I am thinking about is how we played and we were not our best today and want us to clean some things up the final three games we have left to get us ready for the playoffs."
The Trojans 19-8 overall have all but wrapped the top seed heading into the Region 4 Division I Tournament. Triton is a perfect 13-0 against Region 4 DI opponents.
The win in Milwaukee against Bryant & Stratton (12-12) was a homecoming for sophomores
Jazzmine Smith and
Jayla Rankin who played together 10 minutes away at Wisconsin Lutheran High School.
Smith paced the Trojans with 14 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Rankin continued her NJCAA All-American push with 11 points, nine assists and seven steals.
Sophomore guard
Jada Branch had 11 points, six assists and six steals on the afternoon.
Mariah Phelps and
Jocelyn Tibbetts each finished with eight points for Triton.
The Trojans' defense was the story, forcing 35 Bobcat turnovers that led to 40 points. Triton finished with 28 total steals. As a team, the Trojans are ranked third in the country in steals, averaging just under 17 takeaways per game.
Triton returns to the Jorndt Athletic Complex for their final home game of the regular season this Thursday (Feb. 19) for "Pack the Place Night" against Malcolm X College. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. Admission, along with hot dogs, chips and soft drinks will all be for free.
