There were plenty of smiles for the Triton College women's soccer team as they celebrated 'Sophomore Night' by cruising to a 6-0 win over Harper College Oct. 21 at the Jorndt Athletic Complex Multi-Purpose Field.
The Trojans conclude the regular season with a mark of 6-7-2 and will find out over the weekend who their opening round opponent will be in Region 4 Division II Tournament that begins on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Triton, depending on other results to end the week, can still potentially host a first round game.
But the Trojans had their way with the Hawks (2-9-2) as six different players scored.
Mia Rodriguez put Triton on the board in the 31
st minute, sneaking a shot inside the left post past the diving Harper to goalie.
Then the Trojans broke things open with a five-goal second half.
Alexa Herrera,
Caroline Kraus,
Lizbeth Sanchez and
Citlali Lopez all found the back of the net.
However, the icing on the cake came when starting goalkeeper
Ashley Mancera switch jerseys and played the field the final 15 minutes and scored in the 89
th minute.
"Ashley is not just a goalie, but she is a soccer player," said Triton head coach
Francisco Estrada. "She is really good with her feet and has a high soccer IQ. She had a great chance, buried it in the side netting and was able to celebrate some."
There was more celebration following the game as the program recognized its 12 sophomores.
"Our sophomore class have made an impact during their time at Triton," Estrada said. "They showed a lot of grit and character and was great to see them all get quality minutes, perform well and display how much they improved."
