For the third time in the last four seasons, the Triton College men's basketball team has punched their ticket to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Hutchinson, KS.
The Trojans fell short of claiming the automatic spot in the field of 24 after losing the Midwest District Championship game 84-72 to Three Rivers College Saturday, March 15 in Poplar Bluff, MO. However, Triton's impressive overall resume, finishing 28-5 and ranked among the top 10 in the nation most of the season was enough for the Trojans to secure one of the eight at-large bids.
The Trojans are the No. 15 seed and will play the No. 18 seed, Columbia State Community College from Columbia, TN in a first round game Saturday, March 22 at 2:30 p.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Chargers (27-4) are the champions representing the Appalachian District. Columbia State and Triton had one common opponent on their schedules, another national tourney team, Vincennes University. The Charges won their meeting Nov. 2 80-68 while Triton lost to the Trailblazers 85-71 on Dec. 7.
The Trojans in their previous two trips to 'Hutch' are 6-2 overall, advancing to the Final Four in 2022 and last season were National Runners-up.
Triton has a balanced attack led by Region 4 Player of the Year and All-American candidate
Dayjaun Anderson. The University of Alabama-Birmingham commit is averaging 18.5 points per game on 43 percent shooting from field, including 38 percent from three-point range.
Prior to the Midwest District title game, the Trojans won their fourth Region 4 crown in five years with a 79-76 victory over Kankakee Community College March 8 at the Jorndt Athletic Complex gymnasium in River Grove.
