The Triton College women's basketball team picked up a much-needed 57-50 road victory at regional rival Malcolm X College Dec. 4 in the first of two regular season meetings.
The Trojans (4-8) snapped a three-game losing streak and bounced back after a difficult last-second home loss to Moraine Valley Community College two nights earlier.
Against Malcolm X (3-3), Triton jumped out to a 23-4 lead nine minutes into the contest sparked by point guard
Jayla Rankin. The sophomore from Milwaukee scored 13 first quarter points and buried all three of her attempts from long range.
However, as is the case historically when these two teams separated by nine miles play, the Hawks did not give up. The Trojans went cold from the field as the Malcolm X went on a 34-14 run over the next 21 minutes to lead 38-37 entering the fourth quarter.
The Hawks would open a 49-44 lead with four minutes remaining before the Triton defense slammed the door, using a 13-1 run to close the game. Malcolm X missed their last five shot attempts and
Alivia Brown grabbed a pair of critical steals as the Trojans scored eight of their points in the run from the free throw line.
Rankin finished with a game-high 26 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the field including five three-pointers. Sophomore
Jada Branch added 10 points and six assists. Sophomore
Mariah Phelps had eight points, including banking in a three that started the game-winning run.
Triton is now 3-0 in Region 4 Division I play with consecutive regional DI home games upcoming this Saturday (Dec. 6) at 1 p.m. vs. Sauk Valley Community College and Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 5 p.m. vs. Wright College at the Jorndt Athletic Complex gymnasium.
