After facing the challenge of multiple ranked teams outside the Region 4 to open the season, the Triton College women's basketball team easily passed their first regional test of year in a dominant 81-50 victory Nov. 11 at Daley College on Chicago's southwest side.
The win was the first of the young campaign for the Trojans (1-4) who have dealt with a rash of injuries just two weeks into the season.
Triton with eight healthy players dressed showed they have enough talent to compete as the Trojans broke open the contest by outscoring Daley 28-7 in the second quarter to take a 53-19 advantage into halftime.
Freshman guard
Jocelyn Tibbetts was the spark plug off the bench with a team-high 22 points as she connected on four first half three's and then hit long deuce at the buzzer into halftime. For the game, Tibbetts was an impressive 6-for-10 from downtown.
The trio of sophomore guards
Jayla Rankin,
Mariah Phelps and
Jazzmine Smith was too much for the Bulldogs. Rankin had 14 points, five assists and a pair of steals. Phelps had an outstanding game on both ends with 12 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Smith finished 11 points and nine rebounds.
As a team, Triton ended with 22 total steals along with 22 assists. The Trojans had their best rebounding effort to date with 27 offensive rebounds. Triton also blocked nine total shots led by
Charity Anderson who blocked four Daley shot attempts.
The Trojans busy November continues with a date Thursday night (Nov. 13) at Region 4 rival Highland Community College in Freeport. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
