Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Triton hammers Highland for second straight regional win

The Triton College women's basketball team dominated their second consecutive Region 4 Division I opponent on the road this week with an impressive 79-30 victory Nov. 13 at Highland Community College in Freeport.

After dropping their first four games to out of region foes, the Trojans rolled to an 81-50 win at Daley (Nov. 11) and now a 49-point margin over the Cougars.

Highland led 4-3 early before Triton reeled off the next 19 points to take command and enjoy a 22-6 lead after the first 10 minutes.

Sophomore guard Jayla Rankin led the early surge by scoring nine of the first 12 Trojans points on a pair of threes and an old-fashioned three-point play.

Triton (2-4) was a bit sluggish in the second quarter, but still had the game under control, taking a 32-13 advantage at halftime.

The Trojans came out on fire in third quarter, scoring the first 14 points capped by a Jazzmine Smith three-point play to go up 46-13 with 5:10 to go in the quarter.

Rankin led Triton with 22 points, five assists and three steals. Freshman Jocelyn Tibbetts had another superb game from long range, connecting on 7-of-15 shot attempts from three to account for her 21 points. Smith filled up the stat sheet with 18 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Charity Anderson had 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

For the game, the Trojans forced 33 Highland turnovers that led to 40 points. Triton also shared the ball well with 23 assists out of their 30 total field goals made. The Trojans also had 51 rebounds as a team and 12 blocked shots. Freshman Alivia Brown had a team-high 14 rebounds and blocked four shots.

Triton is home Saturday (Nov. 15) for another out of region test as the Trojans will play Mineral Area College from Missouri for the first time in school history. Game time is 1:00 p.m. at the Jorndt Athletic Complex gymnasium.
