The night went a little longer than anticipated for the Triton College volleyball team against Elgin Community College October 6 at the Jorndt Athletic Complex gymnasium.
The Trojans let a 24-19 first set lead slip away as the Spartans stunned Triton with the last seven points to take the set. However, the Trojans regrouped to take the next three sets in convincing fashion by scores of 25-19, 25-10 and 25-10 to get back to the .500 mark with a 9-9 record.
After the shock of losing the first set, Triton slowly took command of the second set. Then Triton jumped out to leads of 8-2 to start each of the final two sets to cruise to victory.
Thea Tamondong anchored the Trojans attack with a game high 32 assists. Her along with sophomores
Brianna Hernandez and
Paige Walker were a tough combination for the Spartans (6-14) to stop. Hernandez had a game-high 15 kills, while Walker added 10 kills.
Defensively,
April Salgado and
Carole Akers had 13 and 12 digs respectfully for Triton.
The win puts the Trojans one shy of equaling last seasons total with 11 games left. Hernandez credits the chemistry established among the team as the major reason why Triton has made a drastic improvement.
"This year we have a closer group," she said. "We've done a lot of activities off the court to build a connection. What we do outside the court as a team matters a lot. We've built a good bond and enjoy playing with one another."
The Trojans look to get back over .500 when they visit UW-Whitewater at Rock County Thursday, October 9 in Janesville, Wisc.
