The Triton College Track and Field team had a pair of athletes reach NJCAA national championship qualifying standards while competing in the Pacesetter Sports Invitational April 8 and 9 at Indiana State University.

Franklin Park native and Leyden graduate Faustyna Karpiesiuk, qualified in the women's javelin with a mark of 29.42 meters. The minimum NJCAA threshold is 25.88 meters.

"Faustyna has worked very hard since rejoining the team, said first-year Triton head coach Robert Isaac. "She qualified in the javelin throw in her first year of participating in the event and is very close to qualifying in the long jump as well."

Another in-district product, Kimani Coffee out of Proviso West qualified in the men's discus. He threw a mark of 38.75 meters. The minimum NJCAA standard is 38.05 meters. Coffee also scored three points for the team with a sixth place finish in the javelin with a mark of 37.50 meters.

"Kimani was the conference champion in high school in the same event he has qualified in, the discus," Isaac said. "He has really transitioned well from the 1.6kg weight thrown in high school to the 2.0kg thrown in college. He is looking to qualify in the javelin and has a great chance of doing so."

The Trojans have a couple of outdoor events remaining April 23 at Olivet Nazarene University and April 29 at Elmhurst University before heading the NJCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships may 12-14 in Troy, NY.

"They both beat several scholarship athletes in their events," Isaac said. "Things are headed in the right direction with our sprinters who are getting better every week. We have two more meets for all our athletes to qualify."
