Now the waiting game begins for the Triton College men's basketball team. The Trojans postseason fate lies in the hands of the NJCAA Division I basketball seeding committee after Triton's 83-74 loss to Moberly Area Community College Saturday night in the Midwest District title game played in Missouri. The No. 10 ranked Trojans (27-5) will learn Sunday at 5:30 p.m. during the NJCAA selection show if they will claim one of the eight at-large bids to the national tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.
Against No. 22 ranked Moberly (27-6), Triton got off to slow starts in both halves which proved to be costly.
The Greyhounds jumped out a 10-2 lead less than three minutes into the contest to force Trojans head coach
John Clancy to burn an early timeout.
Triton would answer with a 15-0 run and grabbed a 17-10 lead on back-to-back three's by
Teonta McKeithen. Moberly responded with an 11-0 spurt to go up 23-17 midway through the first half and force the Trojans to play catch-up the rest of the evening.
Consecutive three's by
Cobie Montgomery to close the first half pulled Triton within 38-37 at the intermission.
However, Moberly came out of the gate with a 7-0 run to go up 45-37 90 seconds into the second half to force Clancy to call another timeout.
The Greyhounds would open their biggest cushion at 68-56 with 7:30 remaining in the contest before the Trojans went on one final surge. Triton used a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to narrow the deficit down to 72-70 with 2:30 to play. However, a pair of Triton turnovers sparked Moberly once again as the Greyhounds ended matters on an 11-4 run.
Montgomery led the Trojans with 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from downtown. McKeithen and
JJ Kalakon scored 12 points apiece.
Patrick Suemnick finished with 10 points for Triton.
