The road has not been a friendly place for the Triton College women's basketball team. The Trojans have suffered some of their most difficult losses away from Triton entering their game March 16 at Moraine Valley Community College with a 0-8 road record.
However, the Trojans were able to put things together after a slow start to hold off the Cyclones 72-64 in Palos Hills for their first road victory of the season. Triton is now 6-10 overall on the year, including a 5-2 mark at home.
Moraine Valley started out fast, scoring the first 11 points of the contest before the Trojans settled down to erase the deficit late in the opening quarter to take an 18-17 lead. The Cyclones would hit a three-pointer the final minute to go up 20-18 after one quarter.
But Triton gradually took control of the game and enjoyed a 37-33 lead at halftime.
The Trojans have struggled in their road defeats in the third quarter and put together a solid period at Moraine, outscoring the Cyclones 21-11 to take a commanding 58-44 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Triton maintained the double-digit lead most of the final stanza leading by as many as 18 points before Moraine did their best to make things interesting late. Fortunately the clock was on the Trojans side as the lead was too big for the Cyclones to overcome.
Linarys Burnett-Romero (Milwaukee, WI) scored a season-high 22 points to lead Triton on eight-of 11 shooting from the field, including five from downtown.
Aaliyah Dixon (Larkin) had a strong showing with a season-high 18 points along with seven rebounds.
Sophomore center
Dajha Cooper (Elgin) was the other Trojan in double-figures with 13 points.
Guards
Monraia Wilson (Hoffman Estates) and
Mariah Henry (Proviso West) almost finished with nearly identical lines. Wilson had eight points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Henry had eight points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
Triton had one of their most efficient games of the season shooting 50 percent field (28-of-56). The Trojans had 22 assists on their 28 made field goals.
