Things are starting to click on all cylinders for the Triton College men's basketball team. The Trojans picked up a pair of home wins, defeating Bay College (MI)Â 70-57 on Feb. 12 and Highland Community College 66-51 Feb. 13 in a key Region 4 Division I showdown.
Â
Triton, now winners of seven straight games improves to 9-1 on the season. The Trojans jumped eight spots to
No. 15 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I poll released Feb. 15.
Â
Triton sent an early message to the Cougars, the defending Region 4 champions in their first of two regular season meetings. The Trojans trailed 8-5 early on before going on a 9-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish. Triton built a sizable 41-21 advantage at halftime.
Â
However, Highland did their best to make a game of it by opening the second half on a 11-2 run to pull within 43-32 with 16 minutes left. But that would be as close as the Cougars would get.
Kejuan Clements (Simeon) rattled off the next eight Triton points over the next three minutes to help push the Trojans lead up to 51-36. The teams would play even the rest of the way.
Â
Clements would finish with a game-high 19 points, including shooting seven-of-nine from the charity stripe. Guard
Morgan Taylor (Marist) had 11 points and four assists.
Deangelo Elisee (Bahamas) and
Teonta McKeithen (Ferndale, MI) each scored 10 points for the Trojans.
Â
A day earlier Triton used their third and final meeting with Bay to play all of the reserves as the entire starting five saw about 20 minutes of action.
Â
The Trojans were never threatened despite a better effort from the Norse to stay more competitive compared to the first two games that Triton won by over 30 points each. The Trojans had a comfortable 36-18 halftime cushion.
Â
Clements,
DJ Patrick (Atlanta, GA) and
Raymond Grant (Perspectives) all scored 11 points apiece to pace Triton.
