The Triton College men's basketball team has breezed through conference play with little resistance. So getting a break away from the N4C to focus on their new primary Region IV rival Highland Community College was just what the Trojans needed. Triton put together one its best performances of the season in an 83-66 road win in front of a crowd of more than 500 Jan. 30 in Freeport.
The win, the teams 10th in a row secured the Trojans 13th straight season of recording at least 20 victories under head coach
Steve Christiansen as Triton improved to 20-4. But most importantly, the win all but locked up the No. 1 seed for the Trojans in the upcoming Region IV Division I tournament that begins on Feb. 27.
Triton set the pace from the start as they opened a 17-8 lead seven minutes into the contest. Highland (15-6) would rally to tie matters at 30 with four minutes to play in the first half. But the Trojans claimed the momentum back with a 9-2 run to end the half and led 39-32 at the intermission.
The Trojans would score six of the first eight points of the second half to build their advantage to 45-34. From that point, the Cougars got no closer than eight points as
Trey Boston was the catalyst for Triton scoring 15 of his team-high 19 points during the final 20 minutes. He knocked down a jumper in the lane that gave the Trojans a 55-42 lead with 13 minutes left.
David Swedura hit some timely shots including a corner three-pointer to put Triton up 64-47 with 8:04 remaining. Swedura would finish with 15 points on three-of-five shooting from long distance.
Austin Richie was in double-figures with 14 points and his three with 3:30 to go put the game out of reach as the Trojans opened up a 19-point margin at 77-58.
