Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball gets by stingy Malcolm X

The ability to find a way to win despite not playing at your best is a quality that many good teams have. The Triton College volleyball team found themselves in that situation Sept. 17 at the Jorndt Athletic Complex gymnasium against Malcolm X College.

The Trojans won the first set easily over the Hawks. But the next three set were a bumpy ride that Triton in the end was able to navigate successfully in a four-set victory (25-13, 20-25, 25-21, 27-25).

After Malcolm X (3-5) took the second set, the Trojans (8-3) had to battle back in set three. Triton was down 17-13 and drew even after a Holly Trotter (Richmond, IN) ace. Kaya Podtburg's (Eaton, CO) tip over the net during a long rally made the score 20-18 in the favor of the Trojans. Triton would close the set with five of the next eight points, capped by a Trotter kill to win the set.

In the fourth set, the Trojans had to dig out a 15-8 hole. Triton would go on 12-5 run to pull within 21-20 and force the Hawks to call a timeout. The match see-sawed back and forth as the Trojans finally grabbed a 25-24 lead with 3-0 spurt, saving two set points after a Malcolm X return went long. The Hawks answered with a side-out to even the set at 25. An Allison Bonin (Morton) kill on the next point gave Triton the edge. Then Thea Tamondong (Niles West) closed out the match with an ace that caught the back line to secure the win.

Ana Gonzalez (Proviso West) finished the match with 12 kills, 13 digs and block. Skyler DeSomer (Cary) had 10 kills, 23 assists and eight digs. April Salgado (Plano) had a team-high 16 digs. Trotter added 10 digs and three aces. Tamondong ended the night with 17 assists and three aces.

Triton will face the reserves of Elmhurst University on Sept. 21. Game time is 6 p.m. in Elmhurst.
