Trojans jump on MATC early to pick up their fifth win in a row

After a 23-day layoff in between games for the holiday break, the Triton College women's basketball team showed no signs of rust early in their annual regional meeting with Milwaukee Area Technical College Jan. 8 at the Jorndt Athletic Complex gymnasium.

The Trojans overwhelmed MATC with a dominate 30-5 start and were never threatened from that point in an 86-60 victory. The win was the fifth in a row for Triton who is back at breakeven with an 8-8 overall after facing the toughest schedule of any team in the Region 4 to open the season.

Despite the record, the Trojans are most importantly 8-1 in Region 4 games, including a perfect 7-0 mark in regional games against Division I opponents as Triton looks to position themselves for the top seed entering the postseason.

The Trojans shared the wealth against the Stormers (7-8) with five players in double-figures led by sophomore guard Jayla Rankin's 24 points, four assists and four steals. Rankin as scored at least 20 points in all five games of the Triton win steak and is third in the region in scoring, averaging 19.8 points per game.

Mariah Phelps registered a season-high 19 points along with nine rebounds. The sophomore was nearly perfect from the field shooting 6-of-7 from the field. Center Charity Anderson finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman guard Jocelyn Tibbetts added 11 points and sophomore guard Jada Branch had 10 points along with a team-high seven assists.

For the game, the Trojans forced 28 MATC turnovers, recording 21 steals as a team. Triton also had 20 assists out of their 30 total made baskets.

The Trojans look to get above .500 Saturday (Jan. 10) when they travel to Dixon to face Sauk Valley Community College in a Region 4 Division I game. Triton won the first meeting of the season with the SkyHawks (3-10) 75-47 Dec. 6 in River Grove.
