Barnes reaches 1,000 career points as Trojans rally past Malcolm X

Triton College women's basketball guard Trinity Barnes surpassed the 1,000-career point total in a spectacular 29-point showing to help lead the Trojans to a 72-61 come-from-behind victory over Region 4 DI rival Malcolm X College Feb. 17 in Chicago.

The sophomore from Gary, Ind. becomes only the fourth Triton women's basketball player in the 50-year history of the program to eclipse that number.

Barnes, now at 1,018 total points, sits on the doorstep of history. She is 16 points away from breaking the all-time career Triton scoring mark held by Micki McEvoy (1,033) which has stood since 1981.

Barnes did hit 1,000 on a free throw late in the first half. However, the Trojans trailed 41-33 at halftime.

But Triton got back on track with a huge third quarter, outscoring the Hawks (10-9) 26-8. Barnes hit a three from the top of the key at the buzzer to give Triton all the momentum into the fourth quarter. She scored 18 of her 29 points in the second half.

Barnes is currently fourth in the nation in scoring, averaging slight over 21 points per game.

Freshman center Jordyn Coleman was another reason why the Trojans had success in the second half, finishing with 19 points and 19 rebounds. Coleman is now fifth in the nation in rebounding, averaging 12.8 per game.

Sophomore Jalyn Jimenez played a solid game contributing 16 points.

The victory assured Triton their fourth 20-win season in a five-year span. The Trojans are now 20-7 overall.

Barnes looks to break the Triton women's basketball scoring record, Tuesday, Feb. 20 at Wright College. Game time is 5 p.m.
