A 10-day layoff for the Thanksgiving holiday did not cool off the Triton College women's basketball team. The Trojans behind 52 percent shooting from the field won their sixth straight game, 87-70 over Moraine Valley Community College Dec. 3 in Palos Hills.
Triton's balance and depth was too much for the Cyclones to handle led by
Jazzmine Smith who scored 20 of her team-high 23 points in the first half. The freshman guard from Milwaukee shot 10-of-15 from the field, adding four steals and four assists.
The Trojans (7-2) after falling behind 8-2 the first two minutes took charge using a 10-0 run to build a 19-11 lead after one quarter.
Moraine Valley (5-6) would not go down easy as the Cyclones kept the game close by draining seven three-pointers in the second quarter. Despite the barrage, Triton held a 46-43 edge at halftime.
Triton reestablished control in the second half with excellent team basketball on both ends of the floor, outscoring Moraine Valley 30-14 to take a commanding 76-57 advantage.
Triton led by as many as 26 points with just under five minutes remaining in the contest.
Sophomore center
Jordyn Coleman had a strong game with 17 points, 12 rebounds and three assists. Coleman is currently ranked second in NJCAA Division I in rebounding averaging 12.9 boards per game.
Several other Trojans filled the scoresheet highlighted by
Jada Branch with 13 points and five assists.
Lauryn Hunt ended with 11 points, 9 rebounds and a pair of blocks.
