The inside presence of Triton College sophomore center
Jordyn Coleman has given opposing teams fits the first half of the season. Madison College received a heavy dose of Coleman and a pressuring Trojan defense to break open a single-digit contest at halftime to win going away 78-57 Dec. 17 in Madison, WI.
Triton finished a strong first half of the season with a record of 11-3, including a perfect 5-0 mark in true road games and a 7-0 record in Region 4 play.
The WolfPack (4-5) stayed closed early on, more due to the play of the Trojans who struggled from the field and committed 11 first half turnovers. Still, Triton led 29-21 at the intermission.
From that point on, Coleman and her teammates took control as the 6-foot-1 center scored 17 of her game-high 25 points in the second half. Coleman also added 18 rebounds to stay ranked among the top 10 nationally and atop the Region 4, averaging 12.8 boards per game.
The Trojans outscored Madison 24-12 in the third quarter to take a commanding 53-33 lead entering the fourth.
The WolfPack had no answers for Triton's full-court man-to-man defense, as the Trojans forced 29 Madison turnovers that led to 33 points. After the high number of turnovers in the first half, the Trojans only committed four the final 20 minutes.
Along with the standout game from Coleman, Triton had solid performances led by freshman point guard
Jayla Rankin who finished with 17 points and five steals.
Jazzmine Smith added nine points and four assists,
Mariah Phelps also scored nine points with six steals. Guards
Jada Branch and
Aliana Brown each chipped in eight points in the winning effort for the Trojans.
Triton will enjoy the holiday break and will not return to the court until Thursday, Jan. 9 when they make another trip to Wisconsin to face Milwaukee Area Tech for a 6 p.m. tip.
