There was not much suspense in the first Region 4 Division I game of the season for the Triton College women's basketball team. The Trojans in past seasons have been tested by rivals Highland Community College. However, Triton's stingy defensive effort, combined with a better shooting performance compared to the last two games was the recipe for an easy 90-31 victory Nov. 12 at the Jorndt Athletic Complex gymnasium.
The Trojans (3-2) broke the game open by outscoring the Cougars (0-2) by margins of 28-5 in the second quarter and 26-4 in the third quarter. Highland had no answers for Triton's 2-3 zone, finishing the game shooting 22 percent from the field (10-46).
On the other hand, after off shooting efforts in a split of two games at the Dan Hull Memorial Classic, Triton found their stride shooting nearly 50 percent from the field (32-68), combined with being 11-of-26 from three-point range (42 percent).
All 11 Trojans dressed scored and had at least one assist.
Sophomore guard
Aliana Brown led the way with 17 points and six rebounds.
Jazzmine Smith finished with 14 points, five steals and five assists. Center
Jordyn Coleman added 12 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Point guard
Jayla Rankin was also in double-figures with 10 points and five assists. Â
Lauryn Hunt and
Jada Branch scored nine points apiece for Triton.
The Trojans are on the road Saturday to take on Illinois Valley Community College at 1 p.m.
