Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Trojans still in playoff hunt with shutout win over Madison

The Triton College men's soccer team kept their playoff hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Madison College Oct. 16 at Jordnt Athletic Complex Multi-Purpose Stadium.

The Trojans entered the week on the bubble for a postseason spot as only the top 12 teams qualify for the Region 4 Division II tournament. However, Triton (8-5-2) picked up key points with the victory over the Wolfpack (7-3-2) who came in projected as a playoff team.

Oliver Salgado scored the game's lone goal on a penalty kick in the 11th minute. Then, the Trojans withstood a tremendous amount of pressure from the visitors to hold on for the win.

"This was like a playoff game for us," said Triton head coach Piotr Sliwa. "It was one of those games that we were not necessarily the better team, but were the most opportune one and a win is a win."

Madison outshot the Trojans 9-5 and controlled most of the ball possession the final 60 minutes. However, Alexis Garcia did enough in goal and stopped all six shot attempts the Wolfpack fired at him to record the shutout.

"This was probably our best defensive game of the year," Sliwa said. "We have struggled with our play on defense at times and they we able to make the one goal we scored stand up."

Triton is back home this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. against College of DuPage. The game is another must-win for the Trojans as the Chaparrals are currently in the postseason just ahead of Triton in the latest Region 4, point standings. A win by the Trojans should give them the points they need to reach the field of 12 as COD is the last opportunity for Triton to secure playoff points.

The contest will also be sophomore night as five players will be recognized at halftime. Plus the team will be sporting their pink jersey's in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
