Women's basketball gets back to work in win over Bethel Reserve

The second half of the season got off to a winning start for the Triton College women's basketball team as the Trojans picked up a convincing 82-39 road victory against the reserves of Bethel University Jan. 6 in Mishawaka, IN.

Triton, now 12-4 used a 13-0 run midway through the opening quarter to break open the game. Down 5-4 after a Trojan timeout with 4:50 left in the period, Triton reeled off their run beginning with back-to-back three's from Linarys Burnett-Romero and Trinity Barnes. Monraia Wilson followed with a steal and breakaway lay-up. Then Barnes scored on consecutive possessions capped by a three-point play to give Triton a 17-5 advantage and force Bethel to call a timeout with 2:26 left in first quarter.

The Trojans took a 21-9 lead into the second and were never threatened from that point, going into halftime up 42-19.

All five Triton starters were in double-figures led by Barnes who scored 18 points along with 12 rebounds. Burnett-Romero finished with 16 points on three triples. Zariyah Edwards had a season-high 16 points and collected eight rebounds. Leading scorer Monraia Wilson filled the stat sheet once again with 14 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Queen Baker rounded out the balance from the starting group with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Off the bench, Destine Lovett ended up with six points and six rebounds. Jalyn Jimenez dished out a game-high nine assists.

"Our balance showed tonight and was great to see us get contributions from everyone who dressed," said assistant coach Tim McKinney. "There was some obvious rust from the holiday layoff. However, this game and the ones we have ahead are meant to build us back up and get ready for the key regional Division I games we have later this month."
