For the opening 10 minutes, the Triton College men's basketball team found themselves in a ballgame Dec. 13 at the Collins Center Gymnasium against Region 4 Division I foe Daley College as the game was tied at 23.
Then the last 30 minutes turned into the
Jamal Winston show for the Trojans. Winston scored 48 points, including a single-game Triton record 13 three-pointers made as Triton ended up toppling the Bulldogs in lopsided fashion, 120-66.
The previous mark was help by Winston's teammate,
Brandon Muntu, who connected on nine trey's last season against Truman College.
The No. 25 NJCAA ranked Trojans ended a grueling first half of the season with a 10-4 record.
Triton, shorthanded due to injuries and illness in according to the motto of head coach
John Clancy, "Found a Way."
The fury was primary fueled by the firepower of Winston. The transfer from Sauk Valley Community College scored 32 of his 48 points in the second half has the Trojans outscored Daley 66-29.
Winston fell one-point shy of tying the single-game scoring record of 49 points held by Paul Bruett during the 1968-69 season. That record remains one of the oldest marks standing in program history, as Triton men's basketball has never had a player record at least 50 points in a single-game.
"I had a really good game shooting (at Southeastern Iowa) which gave me a lot of confidence heading into the game (vs. Daley)," said Winston. "It was just one of those things when you start to feel it. I was able to get into a good rhythm. My teammates got me the ball and just kept making shots."
Behind the big night from Winston, the Trojans got additional support from
Devon Barnes who had a strong night with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field.
Quenton Flood added 14 points and
BJ Marable scored 11 points for Triton.
For the game, the Trojans shot a blistering 56 percent from field (45-81), including 18-of-40 from long range.
Triton will enjoy the holiday to rest and recover from a travel-heavy opening half of the season. The Trojans return to the court on Thursday, Jan. 5 when they travel to Kennedy-King College for a 7 p.m. tip.
