The Triton College men's soccer team knows at least their first two playoff games will be at home. The Trojans clichéd the top seed in the Region 4 Midwest District A Division by virtue of their 4-2 win Wednesday night over South Suburban College.
Triton, ranked No. 14 in the latest NJCAA Division II poll improved their mark to 16-1 on the season. Â The Trojans finished tied in points atop the division standings with Illinois Valley Community College. However, Triton takes the No. 1 spot as they defeated the Eagles in their head-to-head meeting on Oct. 1.
Things got off to shaky start as the Bulldogs who needed a win to have a chance to qualify for the postseason got on the board first off an own goal five minutes into the match.
The Trojans would answer eight minutes later when
Luis Aviles even things up off the first of two assists on the evening by
Alex Gomez.
The game remained tied going into halftime before Triton scored two quick goals out the break by
Paul Urban and a successful penalty kick from
Ronaldo Rojas.
South Suburban playing with their season on the line, hung tough and pulled within 3-2 before Rojas added the insurance tally the 89
th minute from
Pablo Mancha.
"We missed a lot of chances to put this game away early as we had four crossbars, said head coach
Piotr Sliwa. "It is always going to be a physical game when we play South Suburban, especially with them fighting for a playoff spot. We we're fighting ourselves to clinch the No. 1 seed and took control of the game after that own goal."
