There are many lessons that the Triton College women's basketball program will take away from their first season competing at the NJCAA Division I level. The Trojans winners of their first Region 4 championship since 1994 could not slow down a deeper and bigger Iowa Western Community College squad in a 105-57 loss in the North Central District championship game April 10 in Council Bluffs, IA.
Triton's season ends at 9-13 but as many found out during the course of the season, the record was very misleading as the Trojans played more games and arguable the toughest schedule of any of the Region 4 schools that opted to play basketball during the shortened season due to Covid-19.
The Trojans took an early 3-2 lead after a
Linarys Burnett-Romero (Milwaukee, WI) three-pointer. However the No. 25 Reivers (22-2) went on a 16-2 run and never looked back.
Triton did their best to battle back in the second quarter as Iowa Western only outscored the Trojans 29-22 and took a 50-31 lead into halftime.
But the Reivers opened the first four minutes of the third quarter on an 18-4 run and also used a 14-2 two minutes into third quarter to put matters completed out of reach.
Iowa Western used their depth to their advantage to wear down the Trojans who dressed eight players. The Reivers dominated inside, outscoring Triton 44-16 in the paint and out-rebounded the Trojans 47-28.
The inside game threat opened thing up for Iowa Western who was 16-of-32 from long range. Triton was a very efficient 6-of-11 from three-point range and a solid 15-of-20 from the foul line. Unfortunately, the Trojans just didn't have enough fire power to keep pace.
Region 4 Tournament most valuable player
Mariah Henry (Proviso West) led Triton with 20 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Burnett-Romero was the only other Trojan player in double-figures with 11 points, connecting on three from downtown.
