After a slow start, the Triton College women's basketball team tightened the screws defensively and found enough offense to knock off Milwaukee Area Technical College for the second time in 10 days. After a 93-44 win Feb. 27 at the Collins Center, the rematch March 10 back at Triton was closer but still with the Trojans on the positive side of a 72-48 win.
The first quarter was back and forth as Triton inched ahead for good, leading 20-17 after 10 minutes.
Then Trojans picked thing up on the defensive end, just allowing 31 points the rest of the way and forced 28 total steals. Triton outscored the Stormers 20-11 in the second quarter to go up 40-28 at the intermission.
Milwaukee did their best to hand around as the Triton lead remained 12 at 47-35 with 3:33 left in the third quarter. But the Trojans ended the period on a 9-2 run. A
Dajha Cooper (Elgin) jumper from 17-feet got the spurt going. Then
Dionne Beals (Steinmetz) drove the length of the floor for the layup.
Brianna Duke (Milwaukee, WI) on the next possession picked up one of her four steals and beat everyone down the floor for the open layup to build the lead to 53-35.
Baryah Johnson (Milwaukee, WI) capped the run with a three-point play.
Triton would build as the lead to as many as 28 points late in the fourth quarter.
Mariah Henry (Proviso West) led a balanced scoring attack for the Trojans with 12 points, seven steals and six assists.
Monraia Wilson (Hoffman Estates) finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and six steals.
Linarys Burnett-Romero (Milwaukee, WI) had 11 points on three triples. Cooper was the other Triton player in double-figures with 10 points.
