The Triton College baseball team flexed their muscle in hitting four home-runs during a 10-run second inning to outlast Moraine Valley Community College 16-6 March 10 at Symonds-Puckett Field.
The Trojans have won the first three games of a 10-game home stand to improve to 4-6 overall.
Triton busted open a scoreless game with 10 consecutive batters reaching base after the first two were retired.
Adam Pottinger (Deerfield) was hit by a pitch from Cyclone starting pitcher Brenden Gill.
Jack Ferraro (Lyons Township) singled to put runners at the corners. Then RBI singles by
Sebastian Benz (Weston, FL),
Michael Kocen (Warren Township) and
Thomas Schroeder (St. Charles East) gave the Trojans a 3-0 advantage before the home run derby began.
Jerimiah Cangelosi (Pataskala, OH) launched a three-run shot to left to make it 6-0 Triton. Then
Colin Summerhill (Loyala Academy) delivered a solo homer.
Designated hitter
Tommy Benson (Chesteron, IN) doubled before
Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich) and Pottinger hit back-to-back home runs to complete the 10-spot the Trojans put on the board.
Moraine Valley (0-2) battled back on the warm and windy afternoon to pull as close as 11-6. However, Triton put matters out of reach with two runs in the fourth and three more in their half of the sixth inning.
The key moment late in the game came when
Seth Quick came in relief of Trojan starting pitcher
Dax Meyer (Willowbrook) in the top of the fifth. Quick inherited the bases loaded with no one out and came with the heat. The right-hander from Montini Catholic struck out the first two batters he faced and then got Maximus Bullock to line out to Cangelosi at second base to get out of trouble with no damage done.
