The return to the floor for the Triton College women's basketball team was a tale of two different first quarters. The Trojans were outscored 20-5 in the opening 10 minutes in their season opener, a 64-50 loss at Lincoln Trial College in downstate Robinson on January 20. However, in the home debut January 23 against Bay College, Triton outscored the Norse 20-6 in the first stanza to win going away 77-53.
At Lincoln Trial, despite the slow start, the Trojans battled back to close the gap with six points on several occasions. However the Lady Statesmen were able make enough plays down the stretch to hold off a Triton comeback.
Freshman guard
Jaliyah Davis (Proviso East) paced the Trojans with 18 points. Sophomore guard
Mariah Henry (Proviso West) scored 12 points versus Lincoln Trial.
In the win against Bay, Triton's pressure turned into immediate offense as the Trojans wore down the Norse who committed 30 turnovers. Triton was in complete control as they led the game wire-to-wire.
Henry led the Trojans in scoring with 15 points along with nine steals and seven assists. Davis was once again a factor with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. Freshman
Keiasha Rimmer out of Proviso East added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench for Triton.
"As a team we are searching for consistency, said four-year head coach
Marques Hatch. "From the first two games we were able to see how well and not so well we can play. Defensive intensity and ball move are the two keys that standout the most to me right now. 10 of our 12 players are new this and I think as we continue to learn each other, we will get better."
