The Triton College women's basketball team showed why they are ranked in the top 10 among NJCAA Division II schools in defense Feb. 12 at the Collins Center vs. Madison College.
The Trojans held the WolfPack to their 2nd lowest field goal percentage in program history when Triton won for the first time ever at Madison 68-49 on Jan. 18. In the rematch it was more of the same as the Trojans held the WolfPack to 25% shooting from the field in an 88-42 rout.
The victory marked the first 20 win campaign under third year head coach
Marques Hatch and clinched outright second place for Triton in their final season as a member of the North Central Community College Conference (N4C). Plus the Trojans (20-7, 10-2, N4C) earned their first ever season sweep over Madison (16-9, 8-5, N4C).
Triton started fast and never looked back, building a 17-2 lead with 5:09 left in the opening quarter. The Trojans used a 13-0 with baskets from all five starters to take control and led 22-12 after one period.
Then Triton continued to pour it on the next two quarters outscoring Madison 29-8 in the second to lead 51-20 at halftime and 27-9 in the third quarter to build an insurmountable 78-29 advantage before the non-starters played almost the entire fourth quarter.
All five Trojan starters were in double-figures led by
Bethany Baldwin who recently surpassed the 1,000 point mark in her junior college career. The sophomore transfer finished with 21 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Freshman center
Dajha Cooper celebrated her 19th birthday with 14 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks.
Davion Watt scored 13 points along with five assists.
Jaelah Crosby had 12 points and five assists.
Zenobia Reeds added 12 points and 11 rebounds on six-of-nine shooting from the field.
For the game, Triton shot just under 50% from the field (35-71), including a blistering 9 for 18 from three-point land. The Trojans had excellent ball movement, recording 21 assists.
