The Triton College women's soccer team showed plenty of improvement and was in prime position to pick up their first win of the season Sept. 6 at Illinois Valley Community College. However, the Eagles scored a pair of late goals to stun the Trojans 2-1.
Elizabeth Cannon (Northwood, OH) struck first for Triton with an unassisted goal in the 10
th minute to make it 1-0. The Trojans dictated the pace most of the game until IVCC tied it off a corner kick in the 84
th minute. At worse it appeared the match was headed for overtime, but the Eagles tallied the game-winner from 25-yards out with 45 seconds to play in regulation.
"I thought we were going to get our first win," said head coach
Piotr Sliwa. "We had control of the game until the final eight minutes. It was heartbreaking and you could see it on the ladies' faces. They deserved a better result."
The Trojans (0-3) did not get any favors with the early schedule. They had winnable games with Truman and Milwaukee Tech canceled due to those programs not fielding teams. So Triton instead opened the season against Region IV powers Harper and Madison.
However, the squad composed on nine in-district players has made progress as the program will be making the transition from NJCAA Division III to NJCAA Division II status in 2020.
"I see the improvement," Sliwa said. "It was tough for us to play two of the best teams in the region to start the season. I think we have the program going in the right direction as we have more local young ladies on the team now. We will continue to compete this year and look forward to the move to D2 as we'll have waivers to offer which should make it easier to recruit."
