Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Triton Crushes Ulster County in National Tournament Opener

The Triton men's basketball team did what a No. 1 seed should do when facing a No. 16 seed and that's dominate. The Trojans jumped out to a quick 13-point lead over Ulster County Community College (NY) in it's opening round game of the NJCAA Division II Tournament and never looked in an impressive 107-59 win Tuesday in Danville. The 48-point victory was the largest winning margin in a single game in NJCAA Division II Tournament history. The previous mark was held by Moraine Valley Community College who defeated Shawnee Community College 127-81 (46 points) in 1990.

Triton (30-4) will face tournament hosts Danville Area Community College (27-6) in a NJCAA quarterfinal Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. The No. 8 seeded Jaguars rallied from an 18-point first half deficit to defeat Grand Rapids Community College 78-70.

The Trojans showed why they earned the top seed as their balance and depth was no match for the Senators (19-10) out of Stone, Ridge, NY. Triton had all 13 players dressed score with no one individual registering more than 22 minutes which is key with the potential of playing four games in a five day span.

The Trojans drilled eight three-pointers in the first half, including three early ones from Alondes Williams to help give Triton an 18-5 lead with 14 minutes left in the half. Williams would finish with 16 points and five rebounds. The Trojans shot 51 percent from the field while Ulster County shot just 17 percent as Triton built a commanding 53-22 halftime advantage.

Creig Atkins off the bench led Triton with 18 points on four-of-six shooting from downtown. Martrell Barnes was strong as well off the bench with 12 points. Point guard Issaiah Hayes added 11 points and seven assists. Devin Blake scored 11 and Deonta Terrell chipped in 10 as the Trojans never trailed.

For the game, Triton knocked down 13 triples from five different players and had 25 total assists as a team.

In addition, the Trojans 105 point output was their four consecutive game scoring at least the century mark, equaling a school record set by the squad earlier this season. The game was the 12th contest this season that Triton has scored more than 100 points, which is also a school record.
