The Triton men's basketball team earned the No. 1 seed at the
National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament in Danville, IL. The Trojans will face the No. 16 seed Senators of
Ulster County Community College located in Stone Ridge, NY on Tuesday, March 20 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at the Mary Miller Center on the campus of Danville Area Community College.
Triton's dominance in winning the Region IV District 3 championship played a huge role in why the Trojans (29-4) got the top seed. In Triton's three playoff games, the average margin of victory was an incredible 38.7 points, including
coasting to a 102-64 win over Olive-Harvey College March 10 to secure the national tournament bid.
Meanwhile, the Senators are a rags to riches story. Ulster County was a winless program with an 0-26 record three years ago and have now turned things around to earn an unlikely national tournament bid. The Senators were the No. 5 seed at the District 12 Tournament over the weekend in Scranton, PA and knocked off No. 4 seed Manor College (PA) and top seed Lackawanna College (PA) to reach the title game. Then in the District 12 championship, Ulster County rallied to defeat the No. 2 seed County College of Morris (NJ) 76-74.
The Senators (18-9) are led by 6'3" guard Tyreik Johnson, who was named tournament Most Valuable Player. The transfer from Herkimer Community College is averaging 13.3 ppg and put up 20 points in championship game and 16 points in the semifinal round. Alex Karamanos is another transfer from Herkimer. The 6'2" guard leads Ulster County in scoring, averaging 17.3 ppg. Freshman Shane Jansen is another key player to watch, averaging 14.3 points per contest.
