The Triton College women's basketball team has continued to find ways to win close games. The Trojans used a 16-7 fourth quarter to rally from a seven-point deficit to defeat 20th ranked College of Lake County 55-50 Dec. 8 in Grayslake. Triton has outscored opponents in the final quarter in 11 of their 12 games this season.
The win improves Triton to 7-5 overall. But most importantly, the Trojans are 6-1 in the Region IV and have put themselves in the driver's seat for one of the top playoff seeds after handing the Lancers (9-3) their first regional loss.
Triton trailed 44-39 entering the final stanza following a
Rocio Lopez (Morton West) three-pointer to end the third quarter. Then the Trojans defense stifled Lake County which only made two field goals the entire fourth quarter. However, Triton still trailed with under two minutes play untilÂ
Amari Benbow (Fenton) scored in the paint to give the Trojans the lead for good at 51-50. Triton made some critical defensive stops and were able to close the game by making all four free throws attempted in the final minute. The charity stripe proved dividends as Triton was a solid 14-of-17 from the line for the game.
Yasmin Muhammad (Agricultural Sciences) led the Trojans with 14 points and 10 rebounds, including making eight free throws.
Da'Tasia Almon (Proviso East) scored 12 points.
Jasmine Nelson (Niles West) added eight points and grabbed 19 rebounds for the second straight game. Lopez finished with seven points.
