After a difficult opening three games against out of region opponents, the Triton College women's soccer team broke through for their first victory of the season, 2-1 over Truman Sept. 2 in River Grove.
The Trojans struggled to generate any offense in their first three contests and appeared they were headed to halftime scoreless with the Falcons. But a late strike by
Mirella Catalan with just over a minute remaining before the intermission gave Triton the lead and their first goal of the season.
Truman would even the score midway through the second half before Nayelli Rivera scored the game winner in the 72
nd minute off an assist from
Brigitte Solano. The Trojans were able to defend the final 18 minutes of the game to preserve the win.
Haley Arechiga in goal made three saved for Triton.
"In planning the scheduling, we wanted to all some tough competition outside our region," said Trojans head coach
Francisco Estrada. "It prepares us for some of the difficult teams we'll see in our region. I thought (against Truman) we played with a sense of urgency and in the end were able to grind out a win."
