Things got a little too close for comfort for the Triton College women's soccer team Sept. 20 in River Grove against Oakton College. The Trojans who controlled the majority of play had to withstand a late Owls' rally in holding Oakton 2-1 for their second win of the season.
Kimberly Valdez put Triton on the board in the 22nd minute, burying a beautiful shot that curled past the right of the Oakton goalkeeper. Then early in the second half,
Maribel Correa scored her second tally of the season in the 49th minute to give the Trojans a 2-0 advantage.
Triton had several opportunities to put the game out reach and could not. For the contest, the Trojans outshot the Owls by a 23-8 margin.
Those missed chances gave the Owls an opening to sneak back in the game.
With 10 minutes to go, a Triton foul in the box gave Oakton a penalty kick which they converted to cut the Trojans lead in half. The Owls had a couple of more decent chances late, but were turned away each time by Triton goalie
Haley Arechiga.
The win was much for the Trojans, who snapped a three-game slide.
"It's nice to get back into the win column," said Triton head coach
Francisco Estrada. "I think we've been playing well the last couple of weeks, the results may not have shown that as we were playing some really strong competition. But today were able to put everything together and get the result we wanted."
