Alexandrea Haberkamp's hat-trick was the difference as the Triton College women's soccer team held off Oakton College by a 3-2 final Sept. 21 in Des Plaines.
The freshman from St. Laurence High School got the Trojans (2-3) on the board midway through the first half as Triton took a 1-0 lead into halftime. She would score two minutes into the second half to give the Trojans a 2-0 advantage.
Both teams had to endure the 92-degree temperatures on a sunny afternoon and fatigue was beginning to be a factor as the Owls cut the deficit in half right before the hydration break with 21 minutes remaining in the contest.
However, the mini-break allowed Triton to get a second wind as Haberkamp got her third goal 90 seconds after play resumed to make it 3-1 Trojans. The tally was much needed as Oakton (0-7-1) scored on a penalty kick with 10 minutes to go. Triton was able to defend well and successfully played keep- away to preserve the victory.
"I felt like we played a really good game and kept our composure as being out in the heat was a challenge," said. Haberkamp. "Everyone played their positions, communicated and stayed calm. I didn't think I would get a hat-trick, but I did."
For the game, Triton out-shot Oakton 13-8 and have seven corner kicks to the Owls none.
