A week stretch of four home doubleheaders for the Triton College softball team ended with a 5-3 record after the Trojans split a twin-bill with Waubonsee Community College March 26 in River Grove.
The Trojans (14-15) rally fell short in game one vs. the Chiefs in a 4-3 loss before taking the second game in an impressive 8-1 fashion.
After falling behind 4-0 early, Triton got on the board in their half of the third on a
Chayton Krueger RBI triple to score
Nikke Burke. One batter later, Krueger would score on a
Melissa Gonzalez squeeze bunt to make it 4-2.
Tiffany Lepic's RBI single in the sixth pulled the Trojans within one. However, Waubonsee (6-6) was able to keep Triton off the board the rest of the way.
In the second game, Triton jumped out to a fast start with two runs in the first and three more in the second to take control with a 5-1 lead through two frames.
Gonzalez got the scoring started with an RBI double to left. A Chiefs' error led to the second run of the opening inning to give the Trojans a 2-1 advantage.
Then in the second, Burke drove home
Breanne Deutscher with a two-out infield single. Then the Waubonsee defense made another error on a Burke ground ball to third, which led to the other two runs in the inning.
On March 24, the Trojans split a pair with Spoon River College highlighted by a dominate 15-2 victory in the second game.
McKenzie Johnson was the star both in the circle and at the plate for Triton.
The freshman drove in five runs and scored twice. In addition, she picked up the complete game victory going five innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out seven.
