Wednesday night was a program defining moment for the Triton College women's soccer team. Despite their recent success the last two years, their home contest against NJCAA Division II No. 7 South Suburban College had to be considered their biggest regular season contest in team history.
The crowd of approximately 250 who braved the 40 degree temperatures saw first-hand why the Trojans entered showdown unbeaten and ranked No. 19 in the nation.
However, it took overtime for Triton to remain perfect, as it was "Captain America" once again came to the rescue. Sophomore
America Calvario broke a scoreless deadlock with the golden goal one minute into extra session to give the Trojans a dramatic 1-0 victory.
"It felt like a playoff game," said assistant coach
Maciej Orlowski. "We had so many chances and we finally able to get a goal in overtime. Winning this game was special not only for our team, but for everyone who has been a part of the program. It has been quite a rebuild and tonight showed we are a high-level team."
The win secured Triton (9-0) the top seed in their half of the district entering the Region 4 Tournament and guarantees the Trojans at least the first two playoff games at home, if they advance.
The Trojans will need to win their final game of the regular season Saturday afternoon at Waubonsee Community College to guarantee home-field advantage for the entire Region 4 Tournament.
