Softball continues to roll in record breaking season

Trojans break wins record, now ranked No. 12 in NJCAA

There is still plenty to play for as the Triton College softball team wraps up a historic regular season. The Trojans broke the school record for wins in a single-season after picking up victories No. 42 and 43 in a 13-8 and 18-8 sweep over Bryant and Stratton College (WI) May 1 in River Grove.

The Trojans are 43-7 entering their final six games before the Region 4 tournament and moved up six spots to No. 12 in the latest NJCAA Division II poll released May 3.

In the doubleheader win over the Bobcats, Triton as a team cranked out six more home runs to add to their school record of 61 total. The previous mark was 55 by the 2017 squad.

The long ball proved essential in the game one win over Bryant and Stratton. Entering the bottom half of the sixth, the Trojans trailed 8-6 before pounding out seven runs on six hits in the frame.

Carissa Bombardiere's (Geneva) two-run triple to left center gave Triton the lead at 9-8. She would score on a Melissa Gonzalez (Guerin Prep) sacrifice fly to make it a two-run advantage before more fireworks came.

Katlyn Cherry (Hebron, IN) doubled and then Celeste Boshold (Elmwood Park) and Kailey Kirkwood (Leyden) hit back-to-back homers to cap the big inning.

Geneva Pollman (South Elgin) earned the complete game on the mound to improve to 11-3.

In game two, the Trojans broke the contest open with an 11-run third and after four innings led 18-2 before the Bobcats nearly extended game another half inning. But the game ended when Bombardiere cut down a Bryant and Stratton baserunner at the plate with a terrific throw from centerfield.

Pollman and Boshold each hit a pair of home runs for Triton who crushed 18 hits in their four trips to the plate. The Trojans are currently third in the nation with a total of 581 hits as a group.
