The Triton College volleyball accomplished two significant feats in a pair of five-set victories March 18 in River Grove vs. Kankakee Community College and March 19 at the College of Lake County.
The Trojans finished the regular season a perfect 6-0 at the Collins Center in a thrilling (22-25, 25-13, 22-25, 25-22 and 15-11) win over the Cavaliers. Triton avenged a straight set loss at the hands of Kankakee earlier this month.
Prior to the start of the game the program recognized the contributions of sophomores
Adriana Azo (Guerin College Prep),
Georgia Becker (Proviso West),
Sumeja Hodzic (Proviso East) and
Leah Rettke (Riverside-Brookfield).
Rettke was the table setter once again with a season-high 52 assists along with 31 digs.
But the freshman core of
Bailey Berger (Kenosha, WI),
Miriam Guler (Ridgewood) and
Allison Keys (Columbia, MO) helped push Triton over the top in a hard-fought match filled with several long rallies.
Keys finished with a team-high 26 kills with just four errors. She also added 21 digs. Berger had 24 digs and 15 kills, while Guler chipped in 35 digs.
Triton's (25-21, 25-18, 18-25, 25-27 and 15-7) was another important step in the programs turnaround under second year head coach
Thomas Malesky. The team picked up their tenth win. It's the first double-digit win season for Triton volleyball since 2001 which was the last time the Trojans made a regional championship game appearance.
Rettke had 33 assists and 18 digs to lead Triton. Guler finished with a team-high 33 digs. Keys had 18 digs and 17 kills. Berger ended up with 21 digs and 15 kills.
The win over the Lancers may help position Triton for a first-round bye and potentially hosting a regional semifinal game on March 31. The Trojans have one final regular season meeting Tuesday night at Highland before the seeding meeting this Friday, March 26.
