Lake County Spoils Volleyball Home Opener

The Triton College volleyball team played off the energy of the home crowd Aug. 27 against College of Lake County. It was "Meet the Team" night as several family and friends of the squad attended the Trojans' first home game. Unfortunately for Triton, the Lancers got hot midway through the match to spoil the home debut of head coach Thomas Malesky and the Trojans 21-25, 25-23, 13-25, 19-25.

"The first set was an indicator of how the night went for us," Malesky said. We were up five points (18-13) and allowed them to come back and win. Even though we won the second set, we let Lake County get back into the set and gain some momentum that they were able to carry over the rest of the match."

Freshman setter Leah Rettke had a solid performance. The Riverside-Brookfield graduate finished with 24 assists and four kills with no errors. Sumeja Hodzic (Proviso East) and Jordan Burks (Little Village) had seven kills apiece.  Burks also added five aces. Leyden graduate Jenna Meyer chipped in four blocks for Triton.

In between the second and third sets, the team presented their parents Triton College volleyball t-shirts and hosted a postgame reception.

"I want to thank all the parents who came out to watch," Malesky said. "It not only gave them a chance to see us play, but also for me to meet some of the parents I have not yet met. Having communication with the parents helps create a positive environment and allows us to be on the same page. We received plenty of positive feedback and want them to attend as many games as possible."
