The Triton College women's soccer team flirted with an upset bid of top-seed and North Central Community College Conference (N4C) champions Rock Valley College in their NJCAA Division III quarterfinal game Oct. 23 in Rockford.
The Trojans entered as the eight-seed and took the No. 10 nationally ranked Golden Eagles to the limit. Unfortunately the Triton offense could not cash in on a couple decent scoring opportunities as Rock Valley held off the Trojans 1-0.
Triton finished the season 2-10-1.
"I can't be more proud of the way we played," said Trojans coach
Piotr Sliwa. "The ladies played really well. We fought the No. 1 seed on the road to the end and had our chances. But we could not put any of them away."
The Golden Eagles scored the only goal of the match on a wind aided goal that sailed past Triton goal keeper
Rachel Lopez in the 14
th minute. Other than that, Lopez, an Elmwood Park High School graduate, had a strong performance recording nine saves.
Despite the final outcome, Triton showed that the barometer is moving up as the program begins its transition to NJCAA Division II status in 2020.
"How the team was day one compared to the end of the season, it was like night and day," Sliwa said. "The ladies improved each game and made history by beating two teams (Harper and DuPage) that Triton women's soccer have never defeated before. We did not win the amount of games we wanted. However, we can walk away from this season knowing we came out and competed in every game."
